Private and Government Polytechnics, Delta State, Nigeria

The oldest polytechnic in Delta State was founded in 1973 eighteen years before the creation of the state.

The polytechnic: Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun was established by the then Nigerian government to fulfil part of the requirements of membership of Organisations of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to train indigenous labour force to work in oil and gas industry.

Delta State inherited PTI from old Bendel State from which it was carved out in 1991 but still the property of the Federal Government.

Big Heart State was able to get another polytechnic 11 years after it was created and 29 years after the PTI was founded. At present, Delta have five polytechnics, one is federal government owned, three is state government owned and the fifth one is own by a private organisation.
