The first polytechnic in Abia State came into existence in 1992, just a year after the creation of the state. Seventeen years after, the state was able to get another polytechnic and that was some years after Federal Government pass the bills for the establishment of private polytechnics in Nigeria.
The first private polytechnic was founded in Abia in 2009. Seeing the need for the more polytechnics in the state, three more were established thereafter.
Three of the five existing polytechnics in Abia are located in Aba, a very important commercial city of the state. There is no known polytechnic in Umuahia the State capital. The other two are located in Ohafia.
It should also be noted that there is no federal polytechnic in Abia State, though it was reported that bills for the establishment of one are been treated by the nation lawmakers.
