Nigerian Universities that Offer Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering as A Programme

You must have been on this page because you aspired to be an Aeronautic Engineer and you are looking for a university in Nigeria which runs the programme so that you can apply for an admission with them.

Presently - at least at the time of writing this article - there are only three universities approved by the National University Commission (NUC) and accredited by Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) to run the programme and they are: 

  • Air force Institute of Technology (AFIT): Aerospace Engineering

Seem Kwara State University (KWASU) Malete is no more accepting applications for the programme. In recent time it is no more appearing on JAMB among the institutions that offer the programme in Nigeria

Having told you the universities that run the programme in Nigeria, it should be noted that Aeronautical Engineering and Astronautical Engineering  are two different engineering disciplines under Aerospace Engineering.

In some countries abroad, a student can do Aerospace Engineering or Aeronautic Engineering or Astronautic Engineering.

Aerospace, Aeronautic and Astronautic Engineering are very similar but with just little difference.

What is the difference.

Aerospace engineering is a discipline which deal in the design and manufacturing of flying machines including aircraft, spaceship, satellite, rocket launchers and more. These flying machines could be those that fly within  our atmosphere or outside it and that is what differentiate Aeronautic Engineering from Astronautical Engineering. In a simple term Aerospace Engineering encompasses Aeronautic and Astronautic Engineering.

Aeronautic Engineering: is the study, design, maintenance and manufacturing of flying machines which their operation is limited to within the atmosphere. Such machines include aircraft, missile and more.

Astronautic Engineering study, desig and manufacture flying machines which can operates outside the atmosphere. Such machine including rocket, spacecraft, satellite, space vehicles and host of others. The larger proportion of people that launched and travel into moon or some other planets have their field of study in Astronautic Engineering.

These two field of engineering disciplines are highly challenging and that is why the profession is full of highly talented and intellectual people.

Don't Get Confused

Don't confuse Aeronautic Engineering with Aviation Science or Technology. If you desire to become a pilot you will  have to do a degree programme in Aviation and not Aeronautical Engineering. It is at the aviation school they train those who want to become pilots and flight attendants and some other related professions.

Admission Requirements

There are two ways by which an applicant can gain admission to study Aeronautic and Astronautic at this three universities.
  1. Through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) this include Pre-degree programme which qualify students to be admitted to 100 level and
  2. Through Direct Entry, including JUPEB which qualifies student to be admitted to 200 level.

For a student to be considered for admission to undergraduate degree through UTME (1) above, he must have five credit passes from either
  • West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
  • Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE)/(NECO)
  • General Certificate Examination (GCE)
The five credit passes must include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and either Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics or Geography or Biology and it must be at not more than two sittings.

A student must also  pass Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and also the choice school post UTME, making the required Cut-Off Mark.

It is also required of a student to pass one of the three exam above before he could be considered for an admission by direct entry.
