The Universities that Offer Automobile Engineering As A Course in Nigeria

As popular as Automobile or Automotive Engineering is, not many universities in Nigeria offer it as a programme but instead is Mechanical Engineering which many believe give birth to Automotive Engineering.

Automotive Engineering in a simple term can be called Vehicle Engineering. It is a field of discipline which deal with the design, development, manufacturing, repair as well as operation of automobile - cars, lorries, buses and even motorcycles. It uses the concept of mechanical, electrical, electronic,  software and safety engineering to design safe and efficient automobile machines.

The three universities in Nigeria which offer it as a programme are

  • Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi State 
  • Elizade University (EU), Ilara Mokin, Ondo State and
  • Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
  • Kano University of Science and Technology
  • Air force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna.
While ATBU run the programme as Automobile Engineering, Elizade offer it as Automotive Engineering and Ahmadu Bello University offers the programme as Automotive Engineering but in the Department of Automotive and Mechatronic Engineering. 

It is a five years (10 Semesters) course leading to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Automobile Engineering at undergraduate level. ATBU and ABU run the course at all levels of their degree programme (Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate) while Elizade University is currently offering it at undergraduate level.

The three universities have the course approved by National University Commission (NUC) and fully accredited by Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). 


Admission Requirements

There are two ways by which an applicant can gain admission to automotive engineering at any of the universities above, in as much as he satisfy the admission requirements.
    1. Through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) this include Pre-degree programme which qualify students to be admitted to 100 level and
    2. Through Direct Entry, including JUPEB which qualifies student to be admitted to 200 level.

      For a student to be considered for admission to undergraduate degree through UTME (1) above, he must have five credit passes from either
      • West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
      • Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE)/(NECO)
      • General Certificate Examination (GCE)
      The five credit passes must include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and either Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics or Geography or Biology and it must not be at more than two sittings.

      A student must also pass Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) after which he must also pass the post UTME of any of the universities he is applying to study the course meetng the required Cut-Off Mark.

      It is also required of a student to have five credit passes in the subjects mentioned above at one or two of the three senior secondary school examinations above before he could be considered for an admission by direct entry to study for the engineering programmes
