University of Nigeria Nsukka UNN Engineering Programmes and Admission Requirements

University of Nigeria, Nsukka is one of the three best universities where the Times Higher Education says engineering can best be offered as a programme in Nigeria. The university is also one of the three universities in the country that appeared on the list of the magazine 1000 best world universities 2020.

University of Nigeria, Nsukka started  engineering programmes in 1961, six year after the school was established. The engineering programmes began as a College of Engineering which was later changed to Faculty of Engineering.

After overcoming many challenges the engineering programme at UNN has grown to become six field of study and they are listed below.

  • Agricultural and Bioresourses Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering and
  • Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

Also the number of the academics staffs and students of the faculty have grown over the years and as the time of writing this article, the faculty have 106 teaching staffs and 2775 students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

All the engineering programmes are fully accredited by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

All the programmes at bachelor degree level are run for 5 years period for post Ordinary Level (O/L) candidates and 4 years period for post Advance Level (A/L) candidates leading to the award of Bachelor in Engineering (BEng) Certificate.

Admission Requirements

For a student to be considered for admission to undergraduate degree of any of the above mentioned engineering programme he must have five credit passes from either
  • West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
  • Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE)/NECO or
  • General Certificate in Education Examination (GCE)

The five credit passes must include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and either Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics or in some  instances Economics or Biology and it must not be at more than two sittings.

A student must also pass Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) after which he must also pass the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) post UTME, making the required Cut-Off Mark for his chosen engineering programme.

Admission are also granted those seeking enrollment for any of the above programmes through direct entry.
