University of Uyo (UNIUYO) Engineering Courses and Admission Requirements

There are four universities in Akwa Ibom State but the University of Uyo is the only one own by the Federal Government of Nigeria and it happens to be the oldest. It is one of the two public universities in the school and it was rated the best by the world universities ranking.

The university was founded in 1991 and four years after, it started engineering programmes in 1995 with the creation of Faculty of Engineering. Despite the fact that establishing and running engineering programmes are expensive, the school was able to start the Faculty of Engineering with five departments.

Today the five departments still stand but house eight different Engineering Courses and they are listed below.

• Chemical Engineering
• Civil Engineering
• Computer Engineering
• Electrical/Electronic Engineering
• Food Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Petroleum Engineering and
• Agricultural Engineering

Chemical and Petroleum Engineering are in the same Department

Agricultural and Food Engineering are also in the same Department so also is 

Electrical/Electronic and Computer Engineering are in the same Department.

All the engineering programmes are run for a duration of five years at undergraduate level for the students that enter through UTME. It lasted for four years for the students that entered by direct entry and it lead to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) Degree.

All the programmes are approved by the National University Commission (NUC) and are fully accredited by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN)

Admission Requirements

There are two ways by which an applicant can gain admission to study any of the above courses in as much as he satisfy the admission requirements.

1. Through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) this include Pre-degree programme which qualify students to be admitted to 100 level and
2. Through Direct Entry, including JUPEB which qualifies student to be admitted to 200 level.

For a student to be considered for admission to undergraduate degree through UTME (1) above, he must have five credit passes from either

• West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
• Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE)/(NECO)
• General Certificate Examination (GCE)

The five credit passes must include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and either Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics or Geography or Biology and it must not be at more than two sittings.

A student must also pass Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) after which he must also pass the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) post UTME, making the required Cut-Off Mark for his chosen engineering programme.

It is also required of a student to pass one of the three exam above before he could be considered for an admission by direct entry.
