ABU Zaria Engineering Courses and Entry Requirements

Ahmadu Bello University ABU Zaria has one of the highest number of engineering programmes in Nigeria. It is also among the few number of universities which offer Automotive Engineering as a course in the country.

Ahmadu Bello University started it engineering programmes in 1962, the very year the institution was established. The Faculty of Engineering where all the engineering courses are houses and taught formed part of the pioneer faculties of the prestigious school.

Teaching engineering at ABU is aim at producing highly skill engineering personnel that are capable of solving challenges confronting humanity with their acquired engineering and technology skill.

The list of all the Engineering Courses at ABU is listed below.


All the above listed engineering courses run for a duration of five years (10 Semesters) for students who gained admission through UTME. They lasted for a duration of  four years for those that enter through direct entry but with a maximum qualification of OND and it take just three years for those that enter through direct entry with higher qualification to be completed.

The course are offer at all level of degree programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), Master of Engineering (MEng),  Doctor of Engineering (PhD) and post Graduate Diploma (PGD). The Faculty accept students from everywhere irrespective of colour, religions, political differences and ethnicity background.

The ten Engineering course listed above are all approved by National University Commission NUC and they are fully accredited by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

Admission Requirements

There are two ways by which an applicant can gain admission to study any of the above courses in as much as he satisfy the admission requirements.
    1. Through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) this include Pre-degree programme which qualify students to be admitted into 100 level and
    2. Through Direct Entry, including JUPEB which qualifies students to be admitted to 200 level.

      For a student to be considered for admission to undergraduate degree through UTME (1) above, he must have five credit passes from either
      • West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
      • Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE)/(NECO)
      • General Certificate Examination (GCE)
      The five credit passes must include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and either Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics or Geography or Biology and it must not be at more than two sittings.

      A student must also pass Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) after which he must also pass the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) post UTME, making the required Cut-Off Mark for his chosen engineering programme.

      It is also required of a student to pass one of the three exams above before he could be considered for an admission by direct entry.
