Among the oldest practice engineering in the world is Civil Engineering. It has been suggested that Civil Engineering might have started about 4000 and 2000 B.C in Egypt when human race started leaving nomadic life to start building shelter for themselves.

Civil Engineering is about building structures like homes we live in, roads and bridges we walk or drive on, dams and sewage systems and many more. The popular seven Wonders of the World like Egyptians' Pyramids of Giza, Hanging Garden of Babylon, Colossus of Rhodes, Lighthouse of Alexandria, Temple of Artemis and  Mausoleum at Halicarnassus are all examples of great Civil Engineering projects except Statue of Zeus.

Application to study Civil Engineering at Rivers State University must be done through these two ways: UTME or DIRECT ENTRY.

UTME Candidates

Students must have minimum of credit passes in five O/L subjects from:
  • WASSCE: West African Senior School Certificate of Examination
  • GCE: General Certificate of Education or
  • SSCE: Senior Secondary Certificate of Examination 
at not more than two sittings and the subjects must include:
  • Physics
  • Mathematic
  • English Language and 
  • Chemistry
  • Plus one of the following:
  • Biology
  • Data Processing
  • Technical Drawing
  • Further Mathematics
  • Economics
  • Agricultural Science
  • Geography
  • Metal Work
  • Wood Work
The student must sit for, pass and make the cut off mark of the UTME.
The UTME subjects combinations are:
  • Physics 
  • Mathematics
  • Chemistry and
  • English Language
He must also sit for and pass post UTME of the Rivers State University and make the cut off mark for the Department of Civil Engineering.

Direct Entry Candidates

For a direct entry applicant to be considered for admission to study Civ Engineering at Rivers State University must have the following:
GCE A/L: at least passes from two subjects (Physics and Mathematics) to be considered for 200 levels

National Diploma (ND): Upper credit in relevant engineering programmes to be considered for 200 level.

Higher National Diploma (HND): Upper credit in relevent engineering programmes to be considered for 300 level.

All these plus the credit passes in five O/L subjects as s listed above.

Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree certificate is awarded to students on successful completion of the five (5) years programme at RIvers State University, Portharcourt.
