Qualifications awarded on completion of a study in Biomedical Engineering at Wits University is Bachelor of Engineering in Science (BEngSc). The degree is not a professional one because according to the institution, it cannot be accepted by any professional body for registration. And this is due in part, because it take lesser time (3 years) to complete the programme whereas a professional degree take minimum of four (4) years to be completed.

Despite this, Witwatersrand University accept the same qualifications as for other engineering to be admitted to study for the Biomedical Engineering.

The school of Electrical and Information Engineering is teaching Biomedical Engineering to graduate students who is able to develop series of medical solution using engineering techniques and principles.

Listed below are the various minimum qualifications accepted for admission to study the programme.


Admission Rquirements: Holders of National Senior Certificate (NSC)

  • English Home Language or first additional language at the National Senior Certificate

Scale of Achievement : level 5

  • Pass in Physical Science 

Scale of Achievement: level 5

  • Pass in Mathematics

Scale of Achievement: level 5

  • APS: 42+ 

Admission Requirements: Holders of National Certificate Vocational (NCV)

University of Witwatersrand accept National Certificate Vocational Level 4 with the following grade:

English as Language of Learning and Teaching or as the First Additional language 

Scale of achievement : 70-79% (4)

Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy

Scale of achievement: 70-79% (4)

Life Orientation

Scale of achievement: 70-79% (4)

 and 

Four (4) relevant vocational subjects and each must be at the scale of achievement of 70-79% (4)

After having met the above four (4) requirements, NCV holders will be invited for an interview to be conducted by the relevant faculty and heads of school.
