UNIBEN Chemical Engineering and Entry Requirements

Chemical Engineering is a discipline that study, design, develop, maintain chemical plants and processes for chemical production.

The Chemical Engineering as a course at University of Benin (UNIBEN) lasted a minimum duration of five years for those admitted through JAMB's Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). It would normally lasted a minimum duration of four (4) or three (3) years to those admitted to the undergraduate degree programme through direct entry (those with higher qualifications) depending on the qualification submitted to process the admission.


Minimum Entry Requirements

JAMB's UTME Candidates.

Students must have credit passes in five (5) O'level subjects which must include:

  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • Chemistry and one of 
  • Biology
  • Technical Drawing
  • Agricultural Science
  • Geography
  • Further Mathematics or a
  • Relevant Trade Subjects
The five credit must be at not more than two sittings from one or two of:
  • West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE)
  • Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE)
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE O'level)
  • National Technical Certificate (NTC)
O'level candidates must sit for, pass and make cut off mark for the JAMB's Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and University of Benin (UNIBEN) Department of Chemical Engineering post UTME cut off mark.

  • Chemistry
  • Physics

Direct Entry Applicants

The following qualifications are accepted to study for a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) Chemical Engineering, University of Benin (UNIBEN):

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE A'Level): passes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
  • Higher National Diploma (HND): minimum of lower credit in relevant engineering/technology
  • National Diploma (ND): Minimum of Upper Credit in relevant engineering and technology courses
  • First Degree Holders: Minimum of Second Class Honour Degree in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy or Agriculture or Sciences.
  • Petroleum Training Institute: HND/ND
  • University of Benin (UNIBEN) Diploma in Chemical Engineering, ICT, Computer Engineering or Maritime Studies with Merit Pass or from other accredited universities with upper credit.
Holder of HND with Upper Credit either from Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) or other accredited tertiary educational institution will be admitted to 300 level of the Chemical Engineering while holders of other qualifications as stated above would be considered for admission into 200 level at the Department of Chemical Engineering.

All direct entry applicants must have five credit passes as stated above.

Chemical Engineering at University of Benin (UNIBEN) is accredited by the Council of Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and National University Commission (NUC)
