The Xcel preparatory programme is for the students who could not make acceptable scores in Mathematics and Physical Science at Matric but want to study engineering at NWU. The programme give them second chance.

  • Programme: Xcel Preparatory Class
  • Location: North West University Campus, Potchefstroom
  • Duration: one (1) year

What are Requirements

  • A student must be younger than 22 years of age at the time of filling the application
  • The year of Matriculation to the time of filling application must not be more than two years.
  • Passed Grade 12: 40% Maths and Science (Gr 11 and 12)
    6O% Afrikaans/English.

Study Details

Students take ten (10) hours of Mathematics and Physical Science and two hours tutorial each every week.

Students take a single university subject (ALDE 111 and 121 - language, reading and writing skills). ALDE 111 in first semester and ALDE 121 in second semester. ALDE 111 must be passed before proceeding to take ALDE 121 in second semester. Failure to pass ALDE 111 lead to a student withdrawal from the programme before proceeding to second semester.

Between Maritime University and Navy College in Nigeria

The question in the mouths of many prospective students who either want to be part of the maritime industry workforce or parts of navy personnel is: Is Nigeria Maritime University a Navy School? Or: is Maritime a Military School?

To answer these questions is the reason why this page is created. The page will try to define in simple terms what the maritime is and what the navy is and do some comparations.

What is Maritime

Maritime or Maritime Sector is a word or words that is/are used to describe all activities and organisations that have their business on sea. By this you should be thinking about activities like maritime transportation, fishing, marine and ocean research, maritime defense and maritime sports. And organisations like ship building companies, ships operator companies, wharves operators, oil and gas companies with offshore oil platform, various maritime academics, maritime trade union and organisations and of course navy and more.

Maritime University or Nigeria Maritime University provide academic training for people that may like to work specifically in this sector and other sectors of the Nigeria economy and so if you aspire to work on ship (cruise ship cargo ship, tanker ship, fishing vessel...); offshore oil platform and at other organizations within maritime sector as stated above Maritime University is an idea place for you to get trained. You could also get trained at some of the traditional universities around.

What is Navy College

Navy College or Navy School is an academic institution where people are trained in the art of sea security and warfare.

In the navy school, no matter a student area of specification, he is train to become a military personnel who knows how to use different arms, ammunition and technology to carry out military action deter human aggression on sea in order to maintain freedom and peace on sea.

Different Between Maritime Vs Navy

As stated above navy is a subset of maritime. It is one of the organisations in the bigger maritime sector, but while cruise ship operators are into moving passengers from place to another and wharves operators are into managing activities at wharves, navy provide security against external aggression on the sea.

Chosen to attend a Navy school will automatically make you a naval officer on graduation and it will require you to partake in military operation either as a operator of military vehicles, vehicles maintenance officer, navy flight officer, medic, explosive ordnance disposal officer, pilot, cryptographic support, search and rescue team and more.

While maritime academies like Nigeria Maritime University  prepare cadets for careers in the merchant marine or civilian organisations.
