The minimum entry requirements to study for National Diploma Mechanical Engineering at The Polytechnic Ibadan are:
Credit passes in five subjects at not more than two sittings from one or two of the
- West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
- General Certificate of Education (GCE)
- Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE)
O Level Subjects Combination
The five credit passes must include:

- Physics
- Chemistry and one other science related subjects or
- Technical Drawing
- Geography
- Further Mathematics
- Metal Work
- Auto Mechanic
- Agricultural Science

NABTEB result is also accepted but must be in a relevant trade subjects
JAMB's Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination
Applicants must write JAMB's Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and make the cut off mark.

Applicant must also participate in the Polytechnic of Ibadan Post UTME screening and make the cut off mark for the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Higher National Diploma (HND) Mechanical Engineering Entry Requirements
Minimum entry for Higher National Diploma (HND) Mechanical Engineering at the Polytechnic Ibadan are:
- Ordinary level results as required for National Diploma (ND)
- National Diploma (ND) result, minimum of lower credit. Pass is accepted but must be with minimum of 2 years post ND industrial training
- Evidence of Industrial training
