Biomedical Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife

To study Biomedical Engineering at any university that teaches the programme in Nigeria entails students to be good in Physic, Biology, Mathematics and Chemistry. The discipline combine engineering principles with biological processes to design, produce and maintain medical science equipments, tools and devices for the betterment of healthcare delivery systems.

However, this programme is not taught at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife as you might thought.

What Then is the Biomedical Engineering Department at OAU?

What is called a Biomedical Engineering Department at OAU is a unit in the institution's teaching hospital which has among many other duties:
  • Procurement
  • Inspecting
  • Designing
  • Producing
  • Repairing
  • Installing and sometimes
  • Operating
of all their medical equipments (ultrasound machines, electrosurgical machines, x-ray, incubators, ventilator, CT scanner, chemical analyser, infusion pumps); devices (artificial pacemaker, stethoscope, stretchers and more) and tools (tongue depressor, medical scissors, tweezers, forceps e.t.c)

The unit housed technicians and engineers of different disciplines and qualifications especially in the fields of electrical and electronics engineering, mechanical engineering and computer engineering working to achieve same goals.

The Department is part of the University non academic sections. It doesn't admit students to study Biomedical Engineering. So, OAU is not among the universities in Nigeria that teach Biomedical Engineering at any of it's degree programmes at least for now.
