OAU Food Engineering and Entry Requirements

On this page are the details information about the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife BSc Food Engineering programme. The details include the UTME and Direct Entry Requirements to study the programme at the prestigious institution plus both O'level and JAMB UTME subjects combination.

Food Engineering is one of the two taught degree programme at the Department of Food Science and Technology, OAU Ile-Ife. The other programme is Food Science Technology.

The Department of Food Science and Technology started teaching Food Engineering a few years back with aim to produce needed manpower who will be able to apply science and engineering principles to manufacture cheap, safe and nutritional food and effectively preserve them and thereby bringing creativity and sustainability to the ever growing food manufacturing industry in the country. 

Not only that, the Department aim to arm and graduate students with engineering and technology skills, the type needed in the designing, developing and maintaining the specialise equipment, tools and machinery use in the food manufacturing companies.

The Department of Food Science and Technology boost facilities to cover teaching and research in the areas of Food Microbiology, Food Chemistry, Food Processing and Engineering, Quality Control and Assessment, Nutrition and Baking Technology.


B.Sc. Food Engineering Degree Programme Entry Requirements


The Department of Food Science and Technology, OAU Ile-Ife granted admission to study Food Engineering to two types of applicants:
  • Ordinary Level (O'level) Applicants
  • DIRECT Entry Applicants

Ordinary Level (O'LEVEL) Applicants

JAMB/UTME Applicants must have at least five credits passes in:
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • English Language and 
  • Biology or
  • Agricultural Science
The five credit passes must be at not more than two sitting from one or two of the following examinations:
  • West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
  • Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) or
  • General Certificate of Examination (GCE)

JAMB Coordinated UTME

The JAMB/UTME Applicants must sit for, pass and make the required cut off mark for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

OAU Post UTME Programme

The applicant must also participate in the OAU coordinated Post UTME programme and make the required cut off mark for the Department of Food Science and Technology.

Pre-Degree Programme:

OAU Ile-Ife pre degree qualification is consider for admission to study Computer Engineering if the required points is achieved plus the minimum O'level entry requirements.

Direct Entry Applicants Entry Requirements

General Certificate Examination Advance Level (GCE A/L): Physics, Chemistry and Biology or ( Physics, Biology, Pure and Applied Mathematics), or approved equivalent qualifications.

National Diploma (ND): Department of Food Science and Technology accept Upper Credit in Food Science or Food Engineering or other relevant engineering programme.

Higher National Diploma: Upper Credit in relevant engineering programme qualify an applicant with this qualification to 300 level of the programme.


O'level and Pre-Degree Applicants are admitted to 100 level of the Food Engineering programme.while those apply through direct entry are either admitted to 200 level or 300 level of the programme depending on the qualification presented.

Food Engineering for UTME applicants is a five (5) years degree programme at Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU Ile-Ife leading to the award of Bachelor of Science (BSc) Honour in Food Engineering. The programme is approved by the National University Commission (NUC) and accredited by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN)
